O’s Notes: Wiley plays jazz sax, writes and produces his music as well. The Angola Project is about the prisoners and their music, bottled up inside of the jail perhaps an endless hidden treasure. Howard’s visit found the key to unlocking some of it and sharing it with the masses invite free world. The result is a spiritual, jazzy blues session that is packed with emotions. The soaring vocals on “The Walk” and “Song For A Hot Summer Night” are excellent and pair well with the meaning of each tune. “John Taylor” is another highlight with a pronounced bass line. Excellent liner notes enhance the experience. Angola carries pain today as a place housing incarcerated persons and in the past as a slave plantation. There are many parallels.
